The Unbearable Lightness of Being: A Novel (Harper Perennial Modern Classics)
-Hello my faveyss :) Been a long time since no posting...Exams got me distracted xp Well,at least i finished them... Not at all. Ive got 9 more next semester and then Voila,diploma all the way up :) To be honest i've been craving for this masterpiece and finally got it :) Another Milan Kundera's masterpiece :) I have also read "The Joke" sometime ago and since then, im so into Kundera's literature.I found this lovely one in the bookcase,thanx to sistah' (Je e modhe Sigu)
-The Unbearable Lightness of Being-it is a 1984 novel about 2 women, 2 men, and a dog whose lives takes place in Prague during 1968's Czech history.
The main characters are :
-TOMAS (a surgeon and intellectual.A womanizer as well who lives for his work.Womanizing its just a way of experiencing female idiosyncracies only appeared during sex.After a lot of things happening in the city he realised he wanted to get back to his wife and they both decided to live in the countryside where he discovered true happiness with his Teresa.
-TERESA (is the young wife of Tomas.Her job as an intellectual photographer leads her into some Soviet occupation and problems of Prague.She didn't accept the fact that her husband was betraying her and always kept believing she was a weak person.Finally,after deciding to live in the countryside,she learns her anima through an adoration of pet animals reaching to a conclusion that both of them were the last link to the paradise abandoned by Adam&Eve.
-SABINA (was Tomas's mistress and his closest friend as well.She keeps living her life as an extreme example of lightness by getting satisfaction only by the act of betrayal.She is also a painter.Through her painting she keeps expressing the excitement at humiliation,shown through her use of her grandfather's bowler hat-a simbol thas was born during one sexual encounter with Tomas)
-FRANZ (is one of Sabina's lover and also a professor and idealist from Geneva.Franz falls in love with Sabina.Franz's life revolves completely around books and academia,eventually to the extent that he seeks lightness and ecstasy by taking part in protest and marches such as the last one he had in Bangkok,where he got mortally wounded during a mugging)
-KARENIN (is the dog of Tomas and Teresa.It is a female dog,but its name is in masculine gender "Alexei Karenin"-the husband Anna Karenina ( tricky right xp). As long as this dog moves to the countryside with his owners, gets very happy and befriends with a pig named Mefisto.During this times Karenin gets cancer.During its death the dog unites Tereza and Tomas through her "smile" at their attempts to improve the dog's health).
-This book is a series of anectodes with moments of deep and surreal instrospection.There are several times when the author decides to jump off the linearity- sometimes causing confusions.I found this novel a little romantic,a little enigmatic,a bit confusing,a little historical,a little political and all of that makes it sound unappealing but it is not!
Kundera focuses on the lightness of being to the real world with central themes of being one of love,various shades of loyalty,imprisonment of the body and soul and how our early development determines who we love and do not love as adults.
This is a deeply thoughtful look at some of the aspects of the human existence and things we do not normally discuss as a society,yet are found within this novel.
